![]() The weekend ended Sunday with a seminar by Roth using the "bo" and "sai", traditional Okinawa weapons. All participants were able to practice these techniques with a partner to increase their skill in these self-defense techniques. The last session was with Pinner demonstrating defenses against knife attacks. He demonstrated the moves from the kata "Pinon Yondon" showing various throws and strikes practiced with in the form. Mirza continued the training with "Bunkai" or the use of the movements of forms in self-defense. Morris took over and demonstrated various releases from a ground attack, sweeping take downs and joint locks to control an opponent.Īfter a lunch break, Heyman demonstrated a center blocking technique for an aggressive defense and various locking techniques including a thumb lock that would release a grab from an attacker. The training continued for 48 more advanced students with Mirza doing plyometric exercises to increase speed and accuracy. The 20 young people that attended did games to increase their coordination such as pad jumping with twists, high jumps and punching drills. The morning started with a special one hour class for the young students. Saturday morning was the start of the training camp taught by special guests Mirza, Pinner, Heyman and Morris. Stephen Queen and Janet Fraley received their first degree black belts in Kobudo. Students awarded black belts were: fourth degree recipients Steve George, Paul King, Ray Garcia third degree recipient John Suen second degree recipients Michael Weinberg, Joey Grant, Jeff Young, Justin Suen, Kati Reams, McKenzie Flinchum, Emily Lunn first degree recipients Mel Duprey, Dennis Musalo and junior black belts recipients Patrick McCarthy, Desmond Haigler and Michael Kreitchman. The black belt test was held Friday evening and for 2 hours the black belt candidates demonstrated their skill in basic exercises of blocks and punches, moving exercises, Kata (also called forms), empty hand self-defense, self-defense with weapons including the stick, knife and handgun, and at least one 2 minute sparring match.
